WHY A VAUXHALL FD REGISTER
The Vauxhall FD series cars
were produced in numbers exceeding well over 200,000 units. Today the
surviving number is probably one of a far smaller percentage of the
original figure than that of their contemporary counterparts, such as
Ford's Cortina and British Leyland's Triumph and Rover 2000 etc.
The surviving number of FD's
worldwide can only be guestimated, however, the number of known cars in
the UK can be safely estimated to be in the low to mid hundreds, that is
if the cars that have recently disappeared, and in some cases those
recently rediscovered are included in the total!
Lost and previously unknown
FD's do still seem to be surfacing (although we are still talking single
figures per year) and long term owners are starting to pass their cars on.
Because of this, some of those "lost cars" are being re-discovered.
FD's in any guise are part of
a rare breed nowadays, whether it be an early base model Victor or a top
spec Ventora II example. You could probably also say, that in making
another comparison with an FD's contemporary, a 1971 Ford Cortina mkIII GT
(admittedly a car of probably a substantially higher production figure) is
more likely to have survived in greater numbers than the almost extinct
VX4/90 from its entire production period! This perhaps is not a fair
comparison for that reason of unequal model volume, but the point being
made is that of two similar looking cars from the same period, one has
become virtually forgotton due to its scarcity for a much longer period.
WHAT ARE OUR OBJECTIVES
The main purpose of the
register is fairly self explanatory in its name, in as much as aiming to
unite all surviving examples worldwide. As well as this, in the opinion of
most of our committee and our members, an FD is an FD regardless of its
condition, restored / tatty / original / non-original etc.
Members come and go as do the
cars and as these cars pass through our register they are stored on our
database.
The FD has never quite seemed
to "have its day" as yet, and compared with similar cars of its period of
which some have found increases in value thanks to magazine and TV
coverage, the FD has been left behind perhaps? Although more recently Red
Victor II is the worlds fastest street legal car and the FD was chosen for
a 118-118 TV ad!!!
FDs are few and far between.
The fact that original scruffy examples are still out there means that
restoration projects are still a viable proposition, and in the case of
the discovery of potential "donor cars", FDs that may be currently
undergoing restorations may be in need of parts from them to complete the
job! In the case of FD values, top condition examples should be "up there"
with their contemporaries, the lesser condition cars are on a par with
most other equivalent makes which always seems to have been consistent
since people began terming cars as "classics". Without the FDs chance to
rival others in terms of value the FD will possibly continue to decline in
numbers leaving only a small group of ultra-keen supporters preventing
extinction altogether. We need to even the balance, how we go about this
is a question needing thought to give the answer. Generating interest from
the FD unaware out there would certainly help. Assuring the remaining
examples are not unnecessarily reduced in numbers would definately be a
positive step towards this.
